Michael and Jana picked up their six-year-old son, Joshua, from school and noticed a rash on his stomach. Michael decided to take Joshua to the clinic the next day, assuming the doctor would hand him an expensive, smelly cream to clear his son’s skin. Getting Joshua to sit still, he figured, would prove the day’s biggest challenge.

But when the doctor called Michael into his office, the parent sat in disbelief as words like “hematology” and “children’s hospital” met his ears. Joshua had leukemia.

For the next three years, Michael and Jana sought treatment for their son. Rounds of chemotherapy, painful side effects, and overwhelming doctor’s bills followed. Michael spent a lot of time simply watching his son, observing his sleep, his brave acceptance of medicine, and his adjustment to life in a hospital bed.

Realizing that God never offered trite explanations for things like cancer, Michael still found himself asking tough questions of God as he wrestled through issues of doubt. Michael began to see that though God could have filled Scripture with lectures on the nature of evil and suffering or waved away our hurts with explanations of how sickness will end in His glory, God did something far better. While He will eventually redeem all our suffering, God used His Word to remind us that He will never cease to invest emotionally with us in the moment. Michael noticed that even in our most difficult times, we can, as Michael put it, “have an acute awareness of Immanuel—God with us.”
